Spontaneous Regression in Herniated Lumbar Disc: Mechanism and Prognostic factors
نویسنده
چکیده
Although there are publishings about the natural course of lumbar disc herniation, the natural course of this disease has not been proved literally. Spontaneous regression, which can be seen in natural course of lumbar disc hernias, takes place in literature frequently and draws attention in recent years. In clinical studies submitted in literature, it is identified that spontaneous regression between percentages 50-70% has been seen. The general opinion is that this percentage is valid mostly for the transligamentous discs. There is no certain agreement about the whole mechanism in question. Besides, the clinical studies to determine the prognostic factors is not enough. In this article, two lumbar disc hernia case showing spontaneous regression will be submitted accompanied with the literature, its mechanism and prognostic factors will be evaluated.

Spontaneous regression of lumbar herniated disc.
Intervertebral disc herniation of the lumbar spine is a common disease presenting with low back pain and involving nerve root radiculopathy. Some neurological symptoms in the majority of patients frequently improve after a period of conservative treatment. This has been regarded as the result of a decrease of pressure exerted from the herniated disc on neighboring neurostructures and a gradual ...

Spontaneous regression of a herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) occurs where intervertebral disc herniation loses its volume partly or totally without surgical interventions. In 1985, Teplick and Haskin first documented the spontaneous resolution of lumbar disc by computerized tomography and they reported that 9 out of their 55 patients harboring lumbar disc herniation showed spontaneous regressio...
متن کاملSpontaneous Regression of Herniated Lumbar Disc with New Disc Protrusion in the Adjacent Level
Spontaneous regression of herniated lumbar discs was reported occasionally. The mechanisms proposed for regression of disc herniation are still incomplete. This paper describes and discusses a case of spontaneous regression of herniated lumbar discs with a new disc protrusion in the adjacent level. A 41-year-old man was admitted with radiating pain and numbness in the left lower extremity with ...

Although the first reported surgery for lumbar disc herniation was published many years ago, there still remains little agreement for the most effective treatment protocol for symptomatic cases. Many patients with extruded lumbar disc herniation require surgical intervention due to radiculopathy of lower extremities but some neurological symptoms of intervertebral disc herniation may frequently...

Introduction Many patients with extruded lumbar disc herniation require surgical intervention but some neurological symptoms of intervertebral disc herniation may often improve with conservative treatment. Patients usually try various treatment methods ranging from alternative treatments to surgery1,2. Recently, a new thermomechanical massage device has emerged, primarily in Asian countries, wi...
